Baby Products Paywalled After Launch

Methodology

This dataset tracks baby gear products that moved features behind a paid subscription after their initial sale price. An event qualifies only when (1) the product was sold at a one-time purchase price, (2) features previously bundled with that purchase later required ongoing payment, and (3) the post-launch subscription state is documented in a linkable primary source — typically the current manufacturer subscription page. Where archive.org snapshots of the pre-subscription feature pages exist, we link them; where they don't, the entry stands on the manufacturer's own current subscription documentation plus the launch date establishing the timeline.

We classify each event as core-feature paywall (the subscription paywalls the actual reason most users bought the product), nice-to-have paywall (paywalls features added later as paid add-ons, not retroactively gating original value), or model shift (the subscription replaces a previously one-time-purchase model or unbundles a previously-bundled feature).

New events are added when verified against a primary source. Existing entries are reviewed quarterly for source-link decay. The full dataset is available as CSV under CC BY 4.0 — attribution required, redistribution permitted.
